Port of Long Beach, Ex-Officio Member
It is my privilege to serve as President of this dynamic organization, which is made up of twenty-seven cities of Southeast Los Angeles County, as well as the County of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach. Our primary mission is to improve the region’s transportation, air quality, housing, and economic health.

The region we serve has a population of over two million people who reside within ethnically diverse communities. The economy of the Gateway Cities is in large part supported by the goods movement industry through our local ports of Long Beach and Los Angeles. The goods that flow through the ports account for a major portion of the value of all goods that are shipped to the United States.

We recognize that the goods movement industry is vital to our economy and presents the dual challenge of managing the resultant impacts on traffic congestion and air quality. We remain committed to our initiatives to address mobility and environmental quality.

The Gateway Cities Council of Governments has priority initiatives for the planning and construction funding of improvements in the following transportation corridors: Interstate 5; Interstate 710; State Route 91/I-605/I-405; and the West Santa Ana Branch/Pacific Electric Railway corridor. Studies of the latter three corridors are especially focused on alternative technologies and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).

I am proud to continue the outstanding work of my predecessors delivering programs such as the Homeless Implementation Strategy and the role the Gateway Cities have played in addressing air quality improvement for our communities. Additionally, we are taking a proactive role in the emerging issue of sustainability.

These major undertakings are intended to advance our core mission. To learn more about the Gateway Cities region and our Council of Governments, I encourage you to explore the pages of our website.

Sincerely,

Gil Hurtado
President, Board of Directors
